ABOUT NEW CASTLE
|
New Castle is a charming seaside community and is the smallest Town in New Hampshire. The largest of several islands at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, this town was originally known as Great Island. Chartered in 1679 as a parish of Portsmouth, it was incorporated in 1693 during the reign of William and Mary. New Castle is unique in the state, being the only town made up entirely of islands, connected to the mainland by bridges. New Castle is home to the Wentworth by the Sea hotel, where delegates to the Russo-Japanese Peace Treaty of 1905 stayed during negotiations held at the nearby Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. For such a small community (roughly 1,000 residents) New Castle has quite a bit to offer, including a public beach, two yacht clubs and marinas. It is home to Fort Constitution Historic Site, Fort Stark Historic Site, and the New Castle common, a 31 acre recreation area on the Atlantic Ocean. New Castle is also home to a United States Coast Guard Station, as well as the historic Wentworth by the Sea hotel, which is a resort spa hotel which an oceanfront Golf Course and Country Club. New Castle also boasts the lowest property tax rate in the State. |
